PRESENTATION
SUBAUMA
90 km north of Salvador de Bahia, Subaùma is a charming little fishermen’s village with a festive welcoming ambience where it feels good to be.
Salvador da bahia
The black pearl of Brazil -
It was the ex-capital of Brazil until 1763, also called Bahia because it was built on the banks of the famous bay of Todos Bone Santos (all saints), thus named because it was discovered on All Saints day in 1501 by Amerigo Vespucci. The residents believe it to be Brazil’s town of happiness. It’s true that it releases an infinite lightness from living there.
Founded 50 years later by Tomé de Souza, Salvador de Bahia is the mother-city of Brazil and the most charged in history of the country.
Classified in Humanity’s world Inheritance repertory by the UNESCO, it certainly offers the most beautiful Brazilian colonial architecture’s academy.
Between Low City harbour and the High commercial city (joined by the public elevator “Lacerda”) the town is flowering in churches, convents, forts and patricians residencies.
It's the Brazilian city which preserves the most African roots. It’s an opportunity to discover the "capoeira", an inherited slave fight-dance with monk rituals("candomblés") from Africa. It is the birthland of the writer Jorge Amado. It shelters wonders from baroque (church Sao Francisco, church Carmo).
As everywhere else on the North-East coast, one could not forget the splendid beaches which extend for tens of kilometres in the north of Salvador. Its climate being soft all year long, makes it a privileged stage for seaside breaks.
The exotic image that we've got of Brazil perhaps specifies itself here, in this surprising and attaching town. Bahia is to live intensely wiht unconsciousness and happiness.
Dida Pelourinho's training, located in the heart of the city will certainly please men knowing that the percussionists are female. This happens Every Thursdays at Pelourinho (Bahia Centre).
In centre town, you’ll discover the colonial centre of "Pelourinho" district, which has many baroque churches. I recommend you to visit the famous churches: São Francisco's (gold church), Senhor do Bonfim, Nossa Senhora da ConceiBahianasPraia and Nossa Senhora da Boa Viagem and try not to miss the famous "Mercado Modelo" (a craft market with Bahians people in traditional dresses).
Get tempted by the craft jewels as well as tasting small local dishes (vatapa, acarajé, caruru, etc.).
