July 16 is the date being discussed for reopening of borders, says Speaker and former President, Mohamed Nasheed.

Nasheed made the statement at Monday’s parliament sitting, during a debate held on a resolution submitted by Central-Hithadhoo constituency MP Ahmed Rasheed. The resolution seeks to reopen socio-economic activities to overcome the impacts on the economy, by declaring a “Covid-free zone” under the new normal.

Speaking during the debate, the speaker stated that a date is yet to be confirmed, for the reopening of borders.

Noting that he understands that this is planned for July 16, Nasheed said that the government will make the final decision on the matter.

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih had, in May, revealed that they are prepared to reopen Velana International Airport to “international travel” in July. However, authorities have not disclosed an exact date for reopening.

A number of MPs spoke in favour of MP Rasheed’s resolution, which also calls to ease the nationwide public health emergency and to form a plan to reopen three regions in the country for socio-economic activities given the country’s financial situation.

The lawmakers agreed that the state must give the utmost priority for the safety and well-being of the people, but that it should not affect the state’s income.

Maldives borders have been closed since March 27, prior to the detection of a Covid-19 community transmission.
